The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven matches for Real Madrid, featuring five starts.

When an teenage creates club a historic moment in a crucial Champions League match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.

During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 last-16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek return to secure a quarter-final place.

At 18 years old, the midfielder became the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise Through La Fabrica

This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's academies, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his technical ability, but for the energy, personality and drive he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

In the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him minutes during pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Manchester City.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I started playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated the player following his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my ambition with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in La Liga against his former club - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He is a very quick player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He is extremely dynamic, with excellent endurance, effort and movement."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.

"I realize people are astonished to see him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.

"Thiago will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.

He possesses dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, players may appear for multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive senior international match.

Pitarch has featured for Spain at youth level, turning out for both the U19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his rise with interest.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

His situation mirrors that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz opted to represent Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one victory at City, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a quarter-final matchup with the German champions.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to aid the team chase trophies to come.

After his notable contributions to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa handles me the same. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I must earn my minutes on the field," he commented after the success at Manchester.
