The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track

The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, misfits, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for characters including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.

Overall, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was missing in the song choice.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will love its inclusion.

But for me, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder Sam Riegel wrote words to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand composition, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro appears as one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
