Teacher Killed and 25 Girls Abducted in Armed Clash at School in Nigeria
Weapon-carrying attackers have fatally shot an educator and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a girls' secondary school in Nigeria's northwestern region, police reports indicate.
The armed faction stormed the public educational institution for female students in Maga, Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the beginning of the work week, police confirmed.
The armed individuals "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a gun duel" before scaling the perimeter fence and abducting the learners from their hostel, an official report indicated.
One member of staff was lost their life while safeguarding the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now receiving treatment.
Observers recounted a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who came shooting randomly to create fear.
Community members told reporters that the attackers afterwards forced a number of girls into nearby bushland.
The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and local protection units" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and potential getaway paths.
