Taliban Utilized Abandoned UK Equipment to Find Afghans Who Worked Alongside Western Troops, Investigation Is Told

A whistleblower has revealed the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK left behind classified equipment enabling Afghanistan's rulers to identify local individuals that had served with western forces.

Data Breach Puts Thousands at Risk

Person A, called Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the security lapse were instructed to change residences and change their phone numbers to avoid detection from the Taliban.

Lawmakers are looking into the UK government's response of a catastrophic breach of confidential data concerning approximately 19k individuals who had applied to relocate to the United Kingdom to flee militant rule.

Data Disclosure Occurred

An electronic document including confidential details, including names, phone numbers and in some cases household data, was accidentally leaked by a staff member employed at UK special forces headquarters in February 2022.

The incident became known months later, when details of multiple applicants who had applied to settle in the UK were posted on Facebook.

Taliban Capabilities

Many believe there's a misunderstanding that the Taliban do not have the same sort of facilities that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to MPs.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; they possess it. Should they obtain a contact number, they can locate your exact position. That is what intelligence groups accomplished.”

Under inquiry about regarding if authorities owned necessary encryption, the source stated: “They have complete capability.”

Aftermath of the Information Leak

Preliminary research provided to the investigation indicated that approximately fifty relatives and colleagues of individuals impacted by the breach had been murdered.

A legal restriction concerning the leak was put in force in August 2023 and restricted relevant facts concerning it from media reporting until recently.

Security Recommendations

Given injunction limitations, the source and the volunteer organization she collaborated with advised Afghan families they were assisting that they had “suspicions that somebody's phone had been compromised”.

“We recommended that they moved if they could and switched their contact details. These represented the two main details that, if authorities obtained these details, would lead to them being traced,” the source testified.

Challenged Assessments

The source disputed that internal investigation conducted by a former official had been wrong to conclude that the obtaining of the information by the regime was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.

“The thing to remember is that these individuals are not confronting militant forces; they are in hiding. All concerns relate to former occupations.”

The source explained horrific abuse endured by at-risk Afghans, comprising electrocution, waterboarding, and severe beatings.

“There are cases of young kids who have had their arms broken to force households to say where someone is,” the whistleblower revealed.
