Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race
NYC's current mayor Eric Adams has announced his plan to back Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, even after months of strained relations between the two Democratic figures.
A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations
Just last month, Adams had lashed out at the former governor, calling him a âsnake and a liarâ and accusing him of having âa history of marginalizing Black political contenders.â However, in a recent development, Adams changed his position, announcing he now plans to appear with Cuomo in communities where he maintains significant backing.
âI think that it is imperative to energize the communities of color that have experienced gentrification on how critical this race is,â Adams remarked.
Adams continued, âResidents have seen their rents increase due to neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and Iâm going to go to those communities and talk directly with organizers and organizations and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them engaged.â
Race Dynamics and Current Developments
The election battle has so far been shaped by the contest between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has made headlines internationally and represented aspirations for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.
During a latest candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and Republican nominee his conservative opponent announced they would decline the mayor's support if offered.
Months ago, the mayor had launched his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later dropped in return for Adamsâs cooperation with government enforcement actions across New York City.
At an unrelated press conference on the same day, Adams responded to journalists inquiring into the support announcement by stating, âIâll be with Andrew later today.â
The announcement followed a day after the two politicians were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicksâ first game at the famous arena, which took place right after a contentious candidate debate.
