England to Begin UEFA Euro 2028 Quest at the Etihad Stadium
The English squad will initiate their Euro 2028 adventure at the Etihad Stadium, assuming they secure the anticipated passage for a tournament hosted across most of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
The Etihad Stadium has not staged an Three Lions game since eight years ago, when Turkey were beaten 2-1 in a exhibition match, but is highly likely to host the Three Lions for their first match on June 10, 2028.
The English side are planned to play their last two group stage games at Wembley, but, in the event of winning Group B, their knockout stage opener would take place at St James’ Park. Placing second would mean commencing the knockouts at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Competition Kickoff and Demonstration
The tournament was launched at an event in central London on the previous evening. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the organizing bodies were barracked as they entered the venue by about 50 activists, who demanded Israel to be expelled from international football because of the Gaza crisis.
Banners were raised with messages saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters called out: “Kick Israel out.”
Tournament Timeline
The inaugural fixture of Euro 2028 will be staged at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a fixture that will include the Dragons if they qualify.
Wembley will host the two semi-final matches and the title decider, which will be held on Sunday 9 July with a commencement at late afternoon.
It is expected that an afternoon start, which will also be used for European club finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to families and help reach a broader range of fans.
Qualifying Teams
The Republic of Ireland are due to play their first game at the Dublin stadium and the Tartan Army would do the same at the national stadium of Scotland.
Each host nation’s squad will take part in the qualifying tournament; two reserved places will be set aside for any that fail to qualify for the finals through that route.
Locations and Elimination Phase
Villa Park and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium complete the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one knockout match, with the quarter-finals staged at each country’s national stadium.
The qualifying draw will be conducted in Belfast, which was excluded as a host city last year when it emerged the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on December 6, 2026.
