The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer behind many legendary styles favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

This news arrives just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "genuine original," as stated by the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he commenced designing pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world says farewell to a genuine innovator whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
