Administration Lowers US Flights as Shutdown Drags On

Amid the record-breaking federal government shutdown stretches toward day 38, US airspace will become a little less busy. This doesn't apply for US terminals.

Protective Actions Enacted

Donald Trump’s aviation regulatory body announced flights are being reduced to maintain air traffic control operational integrity during the federal government closure, setting a new duration record and with no sign of a solution between GOP lawmakers and Democrats to end the federal budget deadlock.

Flight oversight bodies selected “congested corridors” where the FAA says air traffic must be reduced by 4% by 6 a.m. Eastern on Friday, a move that would force airlines to call off thousands of journeys and trigger a cascade of scheduling problems and setbacks at some of the nation’s largest airports.

Government Commentary

The administration's transportation head, Sean Duffy, stated on online platforms Thursday that the action was “not about politics” but rather “concerned with reviewing the data and alleviating growing safety concerns in the system as flight directors continue working without pay”.

“Flying is safe today, tomorrow, and the day after because of the forward-thinking steps we are taking,” the official added.

Travel Disruptions

Analysts forecast hundreds or even thousands of flights might be called off. These reductions might account for approximately 1,800 flights and over 268,000 seats collectively, based on an projection by the aviation analytics firm Cirium.

Targeted Terminals

The targeted air hubs spanning numerous states include the highest-volume locations across the US – featuring ATL, CLT, DEN, Texas metroplex, Orlando, LAX, Miami and SFO. In some of the biggest cities – including NYC, Texas city and Chicago – multiple airports will be involved.

Each of the three air terminals operating in the nation's capital region – Dulles Airport, BWI and DCA – will be affected, certainly generating schedule changes for lawmakers as well as additional passengers.
